Tried going today.. It's too muddy, almost impossible to get in thru the mud!
I am from Massillon and still live there and I was really excited when I heard we got a dog park. However, I quickly changed my mind after a few visits. Many dog owners that frequent this park are obnoxious, ignorant and refuse to discipline their dogs; simply irresponsible and uneducated dog owners. The regular visitors think that the park belongs to them and they treat it as their own backyard letting their dogs do as they please. The people that go to this park think that socializing your dog means letting it run wild and terrorize other people and dogs at the park. There is a definite pack mentally (and I'm not talking about the dogs). I have also received several snide remarks from others at the park. On my first visit one man commented that he hadn't seen me there before and I replied that it was my first time there and that I normally go to the Canal Fulton park. His response was,"Oh, you're one of those, think you´re too good for the Massillon dog park?" When I would talk to others at the park he would butt in and say snidely, "She's one of those from the Canal Fulton Park." Get a grip buddy! On subsequent visits he was still rude, almost to the point of harassment. Others in the group would not talk to me because I wasn't already part of their "club". The attitude of the other dog owners coupled with the behavior of their aggressive, unruly dogs made me swear the place off for good. If that wasn´t already enough, my dog´s trainer made an announcement to the class to never take your dog there. We also learned a few weeks later that a dog had killed another at the same park.
On a positive note, the park´s location is great, but very muddy. However, I will be sticking to Canal Fulton´s park. It is cleaner and the people as well as the dogs are much friendlier and have better manners. It is also in the same general area.
Made my decision today 11/21/10 NEVER to take my dog back to park. I'd rather have a dog some would say " unsociable " than have a pit bull bite my beautiful Golden Retriever. If having a "Social" dog ... like most dog owners reason for taking their dogs go to the park think....good luck on the social skills your dog might acquire. Most dog owners are there to socialize with other people. Go to Westfield Mall and walk and talk to other people..as far as your pets>>>>>> take them to a dog obedience school where manners and well trained " SOCIAL " dogs are in abundance. Should have listen to my vet who quote said " The Massillon Dog park is the WORST place you could ever take your dog" WISH I WOULD HAVE LISTEN!!!!!!!
today was our first day there i went with our dogs queenie who is springer spaniel and harley who is min pin .. we had a great time there though i didnt witness any agressive dogs there i was told by some friendly ppl that frequent the park that there has been some agressive dogs brought there and that there was a small dog killed so i want to say if you go and your dog is the type that has zero agressiveness take them in the said for the small dogs some people have no common sense and will take their dogs there knowing that they will attack another dog or will rescue a pet and take it there and let it loose not knowing how it is with other dogs!! overaLL we had a blast and i will visit again soon
The Furnas Dog Park located 17th Street NE in Masillon is a great place for your dog to release some pent up energies. It has two sparated fenced in areas that are partially shaded. One fenced in area is for dogs 35 lbs. and under and the other is for larger breed dogs. THe park is situated next to a creek. Due to its proximity to the creek it does get very wet and muddy during certain times of the year. I would recommend a blanket in your vehicle just in case it is one of those times. I would estimate each fenced in area to be approximately 150' by 400'. Plenty of room for the dogs to roam and socialize with the other dogs around.
