One of the better dog parks/runs I have found so far in NYC

One of the better dog parks/runs I have found so far in NYC.

Things it has going for it:

- Officially opened in Dec 2010, so not alot of wear and tear
- Very clean
- Great drainage
- Great view of the Throgs Neck Bridge
- Plenty of parking
- Plenty of seating for owners
- Has 2 dog drinking fountains
- Has 2 separate runs (big and small dog runs)
- Plenty of room for dogs to really run
- Doesn't have dirt or wood chips (no mud), some sort of litter material
- Safe area/park
- Hose to cool off dogs

Things it has against it:

- No shade. The parks dept planted some new trees around the outside perimeter of the run but they are very young and offer no shade
- Can get windy
- Some owners are a little inattentive to their overly dominate dogs
- No bathrooms (for owners) anywhere in the park
- Can get a little crowded at peak times on weekends
- Wet dogs beware....that litter material can dry in your dogs hair making for not so easy clean up

Have been on a dog run/park tour almost every weekend since we got our new addition and this is in my opinion the best NYC dog run/park that I have experienced so far mostly due to the $500,000+/- construction of this park.

Update Aug 2012

Well the word is out on this dog run and it shows. The ground cover that they used (crushed granite?) is showing its weakness.....so many dogs have been using this park that weed blocking material is showing through and has now become somewhat of a tripping hazard. Hopefully the parks dept will replace the ground cover to something more durable.

Update Sept 2012

Looks like enough people complained about the ground cover, since the city put more crushed gravel down. This only temporarily fixes the problem. The city should look into that new astro turf made for dog runs. Something like this http://progreen.com/dogr….... there are a bunch of companies that have/make this type of product so I am sure they can bid it out.

Great Place

This run is great. They have a large main area with plenty of space for my dog to run as well as a separate smaller space for smaller dogs. The ground is a cat little type material that does not get muddy in the rain and cleans off easily. Its also well maintained. There is fountain with a people spot and a dog spot. Most importantly, the people that come here respect the park and clean up after their dogs.
