One of the better dog runs in Manhattan with great views.
Things it has going for it:
- Decent size runs for Manhattan
- Not a lot of wear and tear
- Very clean
- Seating for humans
- Has a water spigot in each run
- Area to hose off your dog
- Has 2 separate runs (big and small dog runs)
- Safe area/park
- Good fencing and gates
- Views of East River and 59th St Bridge
Things it has against it:
- No bathrooms for humans nearby
- Can get windy
- Not much shade
- Has poop bag dispensers but never see poop bags in them
- Crushed granite litter material is better than dirt or wood chips, but if you have a wet long haired dog, that stuff if a pain to clean off your dog and gets dusty when dry.
This is by far one of the better dog runs in Manhattan that I have experienced so far mostly due to its renovation/construction and the people using it, for the most part follow the rules. If they used pea gravel or synthetic turf as ground cover and had more shade, it would probably be a perfect 5 star run in my opinion.
I live in the neighborhood and tried this controversial crushed stone surface for several months -- and then gave up. Dusty when dry and muddy when wet, there is really no time when it works if your dogs are low to the ground and white like mine are and you have a low filthy dog tolerance. The City spent $1 million dollars on this run making it the most expensive dog run in the world, yet the surface renders it of limited use to dog owners.
The surface material of this dog run is NOT sand. It is a material called "brownstone screenings" which gets very MUDDY and DIRTY after it rains. It also stains clothes; sticks to tennis balls and gets very dusty when dry. Numerous dogs have suffered eye and skin infections because of the surface. It's not anymore pleasant for the humans either. By the way, the "Dance Oval" is at the top of the ramp where the original dog run(s) remain.
I love this dog park. It is very clean and it feels safe to go there at night. It gets really busy around 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm. My dog gets to release all of his built up energy and meet some new doggie friends all at the same time.
