1. The smell you talk of is not from the dogs but the storm drain or how about the nasty creek that has rotten fish that die in the middle of summer the make a 5 block radius smell horrible.
Quit blaming the dog park for a problem that community has had for years.
2. Very very few times have I ever seen and uncleaned pile of dog feces.
3. I have never saw or noticed any dog run off toward any person house or have never heard that before from any of the owners
4. Unfortunately dogs do come to the park with problems but get your dog a vaccine for kennel cough it is no different than walking you dog into petsmart, petco or even walking by another dog. Besides my vet recommends my dog gets it yearly because we go to dog parks and it is a preventative.
5. Get over your driveway people turn around in others peoples driveways all the time. Has it caused any damage? Or prevented you from living your life.
6. This park is far from treated like trash we all enjoy having a place to bring our dogs for socialization and try to keep it decent.
This is a great park to bring you dog. I come several times a week with my Aussie and she loves it. She has tons of friends their and 90% of the dogs are wonderful. Yes this is still a dog park and with that you get random fights but I have only seen one fight in the last 6 months. When and if a fight happens everyone jumps in to help. Very rarely there are uncleaned piles of dog feces but I just grab a bag and clean it up. The only issues there are with the dog park is "The Mean Guy" across the street please don't park near his driveway, and the ditch behind the trees is not safe when it is full of water. In reality this is public dog park sometimes there are bad owners along with misbehaved dogs but I have went to every dog park withen 15 miles of my house and would never go anywhere again. My dog knows the other dogs by name and gets so excited to see her friends. This dog park does have a lot of dirt and can be very muddy at times but half is grass and we try to keep them on the grass. I don't mind a muddy dog as do most of the rest of us. This park is a wonderful place to come to if you want to have a well behaved social dog.
The City of Coon Rapids has taken a peaceful small neighborhood and turned into a violent stench!
First of all the area this park is located in is a storm water retention area. The fence around it was designed to keep people out. As many of you have said there is dog droppings all over the place and after a rain or in the late evening hours of summer there is a stench in the air. Never mind that there are city ordinances that should stop anything like this from happening here. Where are the tree huggers or the water protection folks.
As for the rumors of antifreeze and poisoned meat and whatever other lies these flakes come up with. SHAME ON YOU!! Here is the truth there never was antifreeze in the dishes and the City also has an ordinance against leaving dishes in a park anyway. I heard about the antifreeze and was appalled. I asked the Officer I heard this from if He say the antifreeze. He did not!
I have two dogs of my own and the last thing I would do is harm yours.
Concerning the poisoned meat hanging from the fence. One of my neighbors hangs his deer meat scraps from the fence to feed the crows and the meat is not poisoned. Don't believe me ask him.
As far as parking around my property goes. I have been attacked by your dogs. We have had your dogs run into our garage when we are going places. You use my driveway to turn around in. You park behind my driveway. You park your cars wherever you want. You get out of your cars with your dogs and frighten the children going to the kids park. You are the most irresponsible people I have ever seen. You think that because the government gives you permission to trash a neighborhood that you have a right to trash it.
To the folks complaining about disease's. My neighbors dog who used to go to the park recently ended up with kennel cough. Another neighbor was bringing there dog to the park and neighbor #1 warned them about the cough they replied yes! we know! all of our dogs have it and the neighbors dogs that live around us as well.
Originally we thought this might be a good idea. We quickly learned that it would destroy the neighborhood but the City refused to stop it and/or place it elsewhere.
Guess they had too many friends and relatives with entitlement attitudes to be concerned about the impact on the neighborhood.
So when you come to the park notice there are very few children in the kids park anymore unless their yours. Notice the cul de sac designed to keep traffic down not increase it. Watch how many dogs end up running off into the neighbors yards. Watch how many people are stopped by your conversations in the street. Take notice and ask yourselves--would I like this in front of my home.
It would be nice to be able to have my windows open again!
Scincerely,
The mean guy
This is almost a great place to bring your dog. For the most part, the people are great, responsible owners. I have seen a few instances of aggressive behavior, but not many, and in each case the dog's owner was right on top of it and took care of the problem. The main drawbacks of the place is the angry person who lives across the street and the runoff rivers that run through the park. In the spring the place turns into a mudhole. Still, I enjoy it.
It's big, all fenced in, and in a great location across from the Coon Rapids Dam :D
Doggy poo bags are supplied at convenient locations throughout the park and it is the owner's responsibility to pick up after their dog. Yes, sometimes I've gone and I see a few piles here and there, but instead of complaining about it I just go pick it up and put it in the trash. I don't want my dog or other dogs getting sick from anything, so I'll do what I can to prevent that. And as much as everyone tries to keep an eye on their dogs, there are those times when one dog "goes" and no one sees. It's just how it is, so do what ya can and help out even if it's not your dog.
I've first brought my dog in October 2010 and this was our first time at a dog park. I just asked the other owners the procedures and a couple questions and they all were very friendly and eager to help reassure me that the dogs will usually be okay together. Every now and then a fight does erupt but then you just gotta take hold of them and separate them. This, I am not afraid of and today I did it at least 20 times to prevent the fights. There are rowdy and rambunctious dogs there, but no park doesn't have them. Mine is an old guy and a little vocal with warning barks, but he just tends to his own like a little loner.
I would never have guessed that would be his personality if I didn't bring him to the park. They have different sides to them than how we see them in the home and I think witnessing the change is pretty special. So even though there are a couple piles here and there (it's a lot better in the winter b/c people can clearly see them:) and some 2yo hyper Labs, for example, playing rough, I still love the park. I think it's very well taken care of by the city and I really hope they keep it up. There is talk about some neighbors, lead by a mean crazy guy (so other owners say) trying to shut it down, but it's such a great thing for owners to socialize their dogs if everyone wants better behaved dogs. Barking is not that big of an issue. I just suggest bring your own water, as the only real downside is that this crazy/mean guy has poisoned the water pumps in the past :( I think the city removed them but just in case and best to be safe. But who is to say other parks don't have similar issues? Just know general dog behavior and don't be afraid to intervene if you must. Even though they are off-leash, they still need leadership.
I was there last evening (10/6/10) with my small dog and there were large dogs there, too. We have been to this park previously without any incidents, but last night a larger lab kept annoying my dog and its owner didn't do anything about it. I even grabbed the large dog and told it's owner that he was being kind of rough to my small dog. She, the large dog owner, did nothing about it. I left the park with my small dog immediately. I was not happy that I could not let my dog run without being rolled over and over by the large dog.
I too have seen several fights among dogs and more often than not the aggresive dogs owner does nothing.
this park is getting down right dangerous to bring a loved pet. I have seen several aggresive dogs here lately. But I thought it says right on the rules by the entrance gate if your dog shows aggresive tendencies. to leash the dog and remove it from the park. Guess the rules only apply to those who care to read and follow, not for all. I personally will not be taking my dog there again. I love my dog and do not want it hurt or worse.
Great park with lots of open space to run and play ball. However, there are many irresponsible owners that frequent here that just to the "Stand and Chat" while their dogs poop, annoy and disrupt the others. I've even seen people send their dog into the park then sit in the car. There have been several issues with the corner house as well. Overall a good park in a good spot that I don't know how I'd live without!
Were you parked in front of the blue house on the corner? If so I am sure he was the culprete, if it happens again call the police on him, I guess the know him pretty well.
I was parked across from the park and when I got back to my car someone threw eggs at it. Anyone else have this problem? Need to say I will probably not come back if this is what happens.
We went to try this park today and their was 4 fights within the 15 minutes I was there. The people were rude and dog poop all over. We will never come back.
fence off the culvert. Its not a large area but it's very near the entrance and an instant attraction for dogs who like water. If the water wasnt so black and rancid it wouldnt be so bad. The rest of the park is great..a portajohn for the combined dog and childrens play area next door would be really nice. I have seen all types of dogs and sizes and for the most part not seen any real problem with the dogs..there are always issues w dog people, especially when they come to talk on the phone and not pay attention to their dog (not pick up etc)
We have a two year old miniature pinscher we adopted in February 2009 and have been taking her to this dog park all summer. The people are friendly, and most attempt to clean up after their dogs. Those who don't are often nudged into doing so with a gentle reminder "clean up for chocolate lab over here!" etc. And, then there are the few who are intentionally deaf. The city keeps it mowed and provides bags and trash containers. They have been open to suggestions for closing off the under-fence exits our Mercedes has located and we appreciate their help. There is no water available here, you must bring your own.
The dogs are of all sizes. We find, however, that the big dogs stay pretty much in the center section playing together. Mercedes likes to walk to the back of the park to check out squirrels and along the railroad track fence to run. There are usually only a couple of dogs and owners in these areas. But, we have only once had to leave the park because we felt Mercedes was not safe, and we have not seen that dog again at the park. Most of the big dogs just love the little ones and want to play. Mercedes growls at them if they get too rough and they back off.
Because she was a stray, Mercedes has a few social issues. We find bringing her to this park helps her immensely, and the great dog people here are very understanding.
The man across the street was very opposed to this dog park and takes offense if anyone parks in front of his house or across from his drive way. Since there is plenty of parking around the west side of the park, this shouldn't be a problem for most people. We just ignore him.
Yes, there is a culvert where street water drains. If you stay with your dog, instead of letting him/her run wild, you shouldn't have a problem with a wet dog. But, then, why are you bringing your dog to an outdoor dog park if you want them to stay clean? Plan on a bath if you have a rambunctious dog.
The park is ok. Yeah somepeople dont pick up their poop but if you see it give them a friendly reminder and that should do the trick. Most of the people that go their know each other. Im thankful for it because it gives my dog a place to run and socialize with other dogs. usually in the fall and spring (around this time) a group of people go around and pick up all the poo in the park. Just want to give them a thank you!
Regarding the culver. If you dog listens to you it should be no problem!
My experience to this park was horrible, first off I was yelled at by some guy for parking in front of his house, I am 5 2 and said I was sorry and he just kept yelling almost more violantly. Then after I moved my car and went into the park there was dog feces everywhere and to top it off my dog jumped into the culvert and got all muddy with stank wanter. Never will I come back to this park or recommend it to anyone.
I didn't even know Coon Rapids had a dog park until today! Very large area. I think if someone donated a bench or a picnic table that would be great. If the City of Coon Rapids could block off a section for people with smaller dogs that would be even better; a 20 lbs or less section. Very nice park and I am happy I found it. I think the city had signs for dog park this place would be more busy! I will be back there again soon.
It is an okay dog park, don't like that they have a storm drain that empties into park, the water is nasty and stinky. Dogs can get sick if they drink it, its hard to keep them out of it. Other wise it is an okay park.
when this park opened the neighbor on the corner across from park had a big wooden sign that said we don't want this dog park here! So if there was a problem with anti-freeze the police should be looking his way.
We have not had any problems with the dog park. Some of the dogs do like to race the trains which is cute. There does appear to be drainage from streets that comes in which my dogs were jumping in and getting nice and stinky. It's not a huge dog park but there are enough dogs and there is kind of a trail along the fence for people to walk.
I have been told there is currently some concern over the safety of the dogs at this park. There may have been an incident with anti-freeze in the dog water dishes (this is highly toxic to dogs and can result in death if ingested.) If anything like this is found please report it to the local law enforcement. There also has been some vandalism having the portable restrooms knocked down. This is a pretty good dog park as far as dog parks go. Please post reviews of this dog park if you have any other information regarding this situation and how the city is handling the possible disgruntled neighbors.
