Nice Park but too many kids
2

I like to take my dogs here for a quick trip because it's close to my house it's a nice place for the dogs to get a quick run after their walks however at times the area is loaded with kids from the neighboring playground.

I know the city is aware of the problem with the kids because they doubled the size of the sign warning about children in the dog park but just this week I saw parents dropping off barefoot (YUCK!) kids into the dog park to play.

It's bad enough that I have to watch out for kids running in front of a pack of dogs chasing each other but the majority of the time parents are no where to be seen or they're sitting in their car talking on their cellphone so if the child did get hurt there be no parent there to take care of them.

Besides it's just gross I wash off my shoes after coming home from there and parents are letting their kids run around barefoot and roll on the ground like its a sandbox.

This park would be better if occasionally someone came by to start kicking the kids out and informing parents it's not a daycare service. A kid is going to get trampled by a dog here one day and I'm sure it will result in punishing the dog owners by closing the park.

I thought the dog park being so close to the kid park was a great idea so that you can watch your kids and be with you dog. However, I have a harmless 85lb greyhound and when he would approach people with small dogs they would get offended. Almost as if "eww get your overly big dog away from my little sweetie." The dogs weren't the problem in this park, the people were. Parks are supposed to be places where dogs can meet other dogs and their owners can chat about how much they love their pooches...not snub their noses. If you don't like other peoples dogs don't bring your pooch

Not Again!

Not a place for small dogs. Some of the dogs owners where no wear in sight,on the phone, or just no paying attention. It was extremly dusty, and flea infested! Dogs will be dogs, but owners should be owners and watch their pets. Second trip will not be made.

not the best
1

I've been to this park once with my puppy and it's not the best. Granted it's not the worst, but the "small dog area" seems to be this little fence surrounding a tree. That's not enough room for a small dog or dogs to play in. It's also a bit too dusty....I know my pup isn't going to stay spic and span at the dog park, bit I'd rather a grassier area so that I wouldn't have to bathe her everytime she has a little fun.

Good review

A bunch of you are complaining about the park but my dog and I enjoyed it, there are benches and shade and watering pads, the water may come out hot at first, as with any outside water source, but if you let it run for a second it cools off. There were dogs out there from 10 lbs to 100 and everyone got along. My pup had a blast. There were some dirt patches so be prepared to bring home a dirty dog, which I had planned on anyway. And yes there is a kid park right next to the dog one so yes there were some children coming in to pet the dogs, but if you were expecting to bring your dog out there and not have anyone touch him or her maybe you should stay home. I'm sure there are better parks out there but I think that we will definitely visit this one again.

I'll try another park

This park was not the worst I've been too, but it need many improvements.

Good park

We enjoyed this park. There was no poop on the ground when we were there and every time I saw a dog poop, his/her owner cleaned it up. We liked the shade of the tree and the kiddie pools for the dogs.

As for comments about the people not doing their part--YOU can ask them to follow the rules. BREC doesn't keep an enforcement officer at the dog park, use some peer pressure instead!

Perhaps a different time

Don't be afraid to go back as the mix of dogs (and people) change pretty rapidly. We stayed at the park for about 45 min to an hour. When we first arrived all the dogs were big energetic dogs (our pup is about 25 lbs), but after 20 min or so nearly all the dogs were smaller than ours. There are some nice walking trails just across the street in city park, so if you show up and it is all big dogs, just take a quick walk on the trails and come back when all the big dogs are tired out or gone!

DOG PARK FOR RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS

Dogs will be what they are bred for. The purpose for dog parks is so dogs can run with the pack (after they are pack animals) and establish a temporary pecking order while having fun. With that said the responsibility lies with the one with the dog. If you can†t control your DOG then get one that you can control. If your dog is attacked – don†t blame the DOG – go beat up on the owner of the dog (metaphorically or with litigation that is) and teach the person the consequences of non-accountability. MHO

I think the Dog Parks in Baton Rouge are great and my two doggies enjoy the time spent playing them.

Aggressive dogs and owners who don't pay attention

Somehow this park has become a hangout for 20 somethings to meet members of the opposite sex, smoke, and drink. Don't get me wrong, I am 26, but go to this park for the sole purpose of allowing my dog to play and get some energy out. These other dog owners are aware that they have aggressive dogs, but don't seem to be concerned about it. I often hear comments along the lines of "Yeah, he always does that" while I'm trying to pull my whimpering 50lb dog from their dog's teeth. If you know your dog is aggressive, do not bring it to the dog park! Also, if you do bring a dog to the dog park, do not sit around drinking beer, flirting, smoking, and throwing your cigarette butts on the ground. There are plenty of other places around town where you can do that!

It was disgusting. I kept stepping in poo the whole time I was there! Ewww!

small dog area

I assume it is the little fenced area in the middle of the circle of benches. it is quite small and has a bark (no pun intended) type ground cover.

Lazy dog owners

I have visited the park twice. There are lots of dogs there and that was great as mine had some to play with. But the amount of poop on the ground is horrible. The first time not as bad as the second visit. I could not take one step without almost stepping in it. The dirt area around the benches in the middle was not covered but it was cold and wanted to stand in the sun which was in the grass. I will stick to the dog park in Denham and just bring my own water. It is a shame that you cannot pick up after your pets what lazy people!!

Small dog area

Where is the small dog area? We took our min pin but never saw the small dog area. It is a very nice park but there were way too many big dogs for our little one to enjoy himself. But I would love to know where the small dog area is!

Re: Be Realistic

As a dog owner you are legally responsible for the actions of your pet whether you like it or not. To make comments such as you did implies that you are not a responsible dog owner.
I have an 8 pound Pomeranian and a 100+ pound German Shepherd Dog who is a professionally trained working service dog and would not even break a sweat while severely injuring your pet. According to your belief it would be totally appropriate for me to allow my dog to maul your pet while I sit by and watch.
We have chosen not to use this park, not because of the dogs but primarily due to the number of irresponsible dog owners that frequent this park. It†s sad that irresponsible persons such as you ruin the opportunity for others to enjoy the facility.
In your own words you need to be realistic and get real.

Hello, there is a separate

Hello, there is a separate area there for the smaller dogs! If you're worried about your dog getting roughed up by the larger ones but it is a small dog run.

Get Real

Yeah, be realistic. A 10 pound dog will never hold its own against 50 pound dog. Most parks have a separate area for small dogs for this purpose. I appreciate the fact that Raising Canes is part of the community and helped built this park, but without a small dog park, it isn't a good place for 10-20 pound dogs between 1-3 years old (they're feisty, but will yelp and attract other dogs when in a fight with a big dog). I wish they had waited until the new park on Burbank opened before starting construction on Forest Park. My pooch misses playing with the other dogs.

Be Realistic

I have a 40 lbs. boxer, she had a great time. This place was made for dogs to interact with other dogs. If your dog can't hold it's own with other dogs, I wouldn't recommend it. My baby Dayna had to prove herself, but she quickly became comfortable and didn't want to leave. If your dog is used to her filtered water and caviar, keep her where she's comfortable.

Will not visit again
1

My 12 lb. Terrier was constantly tackled by a much larger dog, who's owner was far to busy to get off the cell phone to come help! When I picked my dog up and told the other dog to get down the lady finally came and fussed at me for bringing in a small dog. A separate small dog area is needed to protect our little ones who love to play with other dogs of the same size!

The park itself was not well cared for at all. Large patches of dead grass have become dirt, the water ran from the fountains hot, and the massive amount of dog droppings make this park unsanitary!

In general the rules were not obeyed. Lots of little kids were let into the the park as if it were a petting zoo. One mother even tried to bring in fast food bags to her kids!

Needless to say, I am sad to see Cane's put its name on something that (largely because of those frequenting the park) is such a failure. We will not be returning to this park unless there are some changes!

Absolutely Terrible

Would not recommend setting foot in this place. The actual park is just fine but the dogs and owners that use the park are absolutely terrible.

As new dog owners we thought we would give it a try and were incredibly disappointed. Our dog was mauled by 7 large dogs and I had to desperately wrestle through the mass, throwing dogs away to get to ours while all the other owners stood and watched without a flinch.

This lovely social interaction is also a pretty accurate microcosm of Baton Rouge - a bunch of terrible, apathetic people that take no action and wait around for someone else to solve a problem. Too many large, aggressive dogs with owners that aren't paying attention. Definitely don't recommend!

We visit this dog park about once a week. It's a nice, fenced area with several shady spots and the benches are actually in the shady spots (as opposed to some other parks we've visited!). There are water fountains for both dogs & people, and there are usually pools near both spigots so the dogs can cool down. Yes, it is excruciatingly HOT during the summer months, so plan to go early or late during the warm times of year .. a midday visit is no fun for pooches or owners.

Across the street, there is a walking / bike path that eventually leads around another lake or two, depending on how far one wants to walk.

Young children are not allowed in the dog area, though the rules are sometimes violated. I would hate for a kid to get injured, but some people bring really young kids in there. There is a nice playground at this park, and many people have older kids who play on the playground while the parents & dogs are in the dog park.

There are restrooms available near the playground area.

BTW, I have never heard this park referred to as Brooks Community Park and I would have no idea where to go if someone asked me how to get there. Most people call it City Park, as City Park is just across the street and includes tennis courts, a golf course, an art museum, and other activities. I guess the Brooks Community Park is part of City Park, but if you're new in town or just visiting, you'd be better off asking where City Park is than the Brooks Community Park.
