I've visited this park several times for hiking. The area where the dogs usually are is safe for me to walk through without any problems. These dogs are well-behaved and friendly, I thank their owners for disciplining them well. I recommend to all including owners of well-trained dogs only to visit this park.
We have been coming up to the Palmer Park dog TRAIL for 15 years. Our dogs love it and overall it's a great place to walk the dogs. The only negative over the last 3 years it has grown in popularity and is getting very busy (parking lot area), too many mountain bikers! The last few times I've been up here we have encountered RUDE mountain bikers who do not signal they are getting ready to pass you and then almost run over your dog. Annoys the heck out of me. People do pretty good scooping their poop now and there are plenty of bags at the start of the trail to carry with you if you forget your own. This used to be a great kept secret amongst those of us who live near the park but I guess the secret is out. Sometimes on the weekends it reminds me of busy icky California! Ugh. But, what can you do.
Some of these people are leaving their comment under the wrong park name. Some of these comments should have been left under the other Palmer park heading; it is a different park entirely. It has two dog areas in Palmer park, the first is right off of Academy as you come in, the next is way into the park and is actually a uhfenced off leash walking trail.
Whereas, this dog park at Yucca Flats is the off leash walking trail. Its a nice quite places to go walk. There are signs warning of run ins with coyotes. I went today and I can promise you it is not fenced. Still a nice area if you have a well behaved dog that wont run off.
I walked the Yucca flats trail for the first time with 2 humans and 5 dogs of various sizes during the week (approximately 1 week ago). We met various other humans and dogs along the way - no issues. Of most concern that day was keeping dogs on the trail and out of the cactus :-)
If a dog at this park bites you I'd HIGHLY suggest calling the police and placing a report. We have Dobermans who we put through very strenuous training and obedience. It drives me crazy when I see completely irresponsible owners.
