Lighthouse Field State Beach (including Its Beach) were closed to off leash use as of November 15, 2007. The City of Santa Cruz just ended its 30 year lease with the State. The State now manages this land and does not allow for off leash use. The City would like to purchase this property but does not like the 1.4 million dollar price tag. Between 10am and 4pm dogs are only allowed on the field area on leash. For further clarification see the Santa Cruz Parks and Recs Dog page or Friends of Lighthouse Field (FOLF) .

Lighthouse Field State Park and Beach
1

Lighthouse Field State Park and Beach is solely managed by the California State Parks system. The City of Santa Cruz has nothing to do with either location. The link above to City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation does not work, and there is nothing on the City web site about Lighthouse Field State Beach (Its Beach).

Since State Parks refuses to enforce their own leash law on Its Beach, the beach is overrun by unleashed dogs. There have been many dogs injured in dog fights in recent years and at least one dog killed by unleashed dogs.

This was closed to off leash use in November 2007 when the State regained control of the property.  The City would like to buy the property and re-open it to off leash use but so far this has not happened.  This park has a beach and then across the street is a large field with lots of paths for walking.  It is still a great place to go even on leash.  Many people walk their dogs along west cliff because it has a nice path along the coast and can be gorgeous on a sunny day.  It can get crowded and noisy on weekends and in the summer so if your dog is a bit shy it may be best to walk in the field where there is less traffic and bikes.
