My first time with Baron and we had a blast! There were only about a handful of dogs but my husky found another husky - good times! I love that the park is divided though some people ignore the weight suggestion and bring in small dogs and then get mad when big dogs run it over. Overall the people and dogs were very nice and candid. I went at about 7 pm so it was pretty quiet. I will totally go back soon!

Large Dog Sign

I noticed that the sign that said Large Dogs - over 35 lbs was missing. Unfortunately, there are people in the large dog side with tiny dogs. Please, keep the small dogs away from the large dog area.

IMPROVED!! separate small/large dog areas..

absolutely worth the trip. they put up a fence separaring the large and small dogs, but there's still plenty of room for dogs to play. now you don't have to worry about you small dogs being scared/bullied by larger breeds. the trees and shade are always a plus, and there are more park benches to sit on.

new separate dog area!

stopped going here for months since my chihuahua got attacked but, drove by a couple days ago and found that they put up a fence in the middle separating large and small dogs. now the entrance for large dogs is off of Nimitz and the small dog entrance is off Sunset Cliffs blvd. pretty decent sized park. some owners put out water bowls on the small dog side because the water fountain is on the large dog side.. a much pet friendly park now. especially for the smaller dogs.

now has separate areas for small and big dogs!!!

great park!

Dusty Rhodes DOES have a small dog section and it is brand new with trees and chairs. The problem is that small dog owners don't use it because that part of the park can only be accessed from a different gate. Dogs need to be monitored by their owners especially off-leash.

Don't go unless you have a big dog that wrestles

I went there for a year before I had to find a new place to take my dogs. I have a boxer and a yorkie. Just like most fenced in parks, there is always that one (or more) dog(s) that have to ruin the experience for everyone else. My yorkie got attacked by a rot wailer. Luckily nothing happened except some fear, but after that, I felt there was more risk than reward from that park.

ZULU at other dog parks!

Hi-
I happened to stumble upon this site after downloading the app on my iphone. I was researching new parks to bring my small dog to. YOUR review obviously stuck with me.
Then.... on a Sunday (just a few weeks ago) my boyfriend and I took our little guy to his favorite park, Nates Pointe at Balboa Park. We frequent the park at least a few times a week so I am pretty familiar with some regulars.
This particular Sunday there was a BLACK AND WHITE HUSKEY there! I remembered this post and kept my eye on him and my dog FAR away. As we were leaving we witnessed THE black and white huskie picking on a small dog. I then heard from a distance "ZULU"!!!! I look over and a young couple (I am assuming his owners)calling him. THEY WERE NOT EVEN IN THE PARK! They were sitting on the bridge outside of the park!
We immediately left in fear!
I wanted to let you know this because I was in SHOCK that they would come to another dog park with their, still aggressive, huskie who has KILLED another dog! Your story breaks my heart and I want this dog BANNED from all dog parks.
I dont know how to get a dog "banned", but wanted to pass this info on anyways.

Pick up after your dog! The
2

Pick up after your dog! The people here are friendly, but not everyone seems to pay attention to the "presents" their dogs are leaving behind. This park does not have a small dog area and is frequented by large sometimes aggressive dogs. My puppy is 45 lbs @ 5 months, not a small dog, but was beat up quite a bit by a huge 85+lb pit bull who seemed to do the same to others. There are plenty of dog parks in SD, unless your dog is up for a "playful" brawl, head to another park.

DRDP

I am a faithful regular of DRDP, have been since my Dalmatian completed ALL of her puppy shots. The recent tragedy at the park is terrible and I feel for both the owners. Dogs of all sizes can be aggressive, and unfortunately dog parks can be a dangerous place, for dogs and their parents.

My own dog has been hurt here, as well as at other dog parks in the city, and although I monitor my dog and her behavior, I know that it's a dog park, and "stuff happens." We have to remember that it's not just the dogs... it's the owners too that must share the blame when incidents happen.

As dog owners we MUST be more responsible for the behavior of our dogs as well as ourselves. So thinking in those terms, here are my top 5 rules for the dog park:

1. Pick up after your dogs
2. Stop talking on your cell phone and being oblivious to your surroundings and what's going on with your dog
3. If your dog is toy obsessed, don't bring toys
4. Don't bring your puppy until it's had all of its shots
5. Pick up after your dogs (warrants saying it again)

Dog parks and beaches are a privilege, one that can most certainly be taken away if we as dog owners don't start policing ourselves.

DOG ATTACK~ PLEASE READ

I AM PASSING THIS ON IN HOPES OF GETTING THE WORD OUT ABOUT A VIOLENT HUSKY NAMED ZULU THAT FREQUENTS DUSTY RHODES PARK.

"Yesterday (6/29/2010) my dog was brutally attacked by a large black and white male Husky named Zulu at Dusty Rhodes Dog Park, in Ocean Beach. The incident took place around 6pm. My dog was dead on arrival to the vet from a broken neck, internal injuries, shock, and blood loss. This attacked was unwarranted and unprovoked. The dog had shown interest in my 5 month old Pomeranian puppy, who weighed 3 pounds, and my 6 month old dapple dachshund weighing 9 pounds, about 20 minutes earlier before the attack. The owner grabbed her dog by the choke collar and removed it from my dogs apologizing for her dogs persistent interest in my dogs. I grabbed my puppy and my boyfriend grabbed his and we moved ourselves to the other side of the dog park. At this time we put leashes on our dogs to train them how to walk. The puppies were on leash right next to us when it happened. The Husky came from behind and went in between us and grabbed the Pomeranian in its jaws shaking and biting him to death. The owner ran to the dog to try to get my dog from the dog's jaws as I was doing so also. I rushed to the VCA up the street where the puppy was pronounced dead on arrival. I also went to the urgent care to be treated for a minor dog bite.
If you or anyone you know was here and saw this or can tell me what happened after the incident or know anything about this particular dog please contact me or my boyfriend. I did get the owner's name and number and have been in contact; but am looking for support of others who saw this as well. My name is Carrie 619-889-3567.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't bring your dogs to this park if they are in any way unsocialized or aggressive. And please don't bring your smaller to medium sized dogs to this park as it can be extremely unsafe and even fatal. According to the vet this isn't the first time a small dog has been brutally killed at these types of parks. Also watch out for that Husky as it is likely dangerous towards other pets now. I would hate for anyone to be going through what I am going through. That dog was my baby, he was a part of our family. We are all beyond upset, including our other dog; his best friend. This was our little family. Know your rights. There is very little action that can be done. Dogs are considered personal property. Dogs need to be more protected than this. They are family members to most people, as ours was to us."

fUN @ the Dusty

the Dusty kin git that way sometimes --

all in all though it's a great park and located jist at the sunset end of the I-8 freeway --

a turnaround point for me as I do search loops lookin fer stranded motorists and accident victims in need of assistance

Shotgun Shela, my search hound, loves the place!

"She" sits up and starts sniffin the air as we git near the I8 & I5 confluance. then, as we git closer she starts "singin" ;) sometimes we'll make it a duet [ German film crew caught us on camera doin jist this last year as they were filmin us fer German TV [ they had 2 cameras affixed in my SAR rig to record my doins out "playin on the freeway" -- helpin folks ]

they also filmed AT the park while "She" cavorted w other dogs and I mentioned that I use a dog park comparison to tell folks to GIT OFFA MY TAIL when I'm drivin -- I say , on the PA, "the freeway's NOT a dogpark! -- ya git any closer to my tail yer gonna git brown on yer nose!" -- got a PA w front & rear speakers -- comes in handy ;)

usually people smile and begin leavin more space --

anyways

near the west entrance there's a tree that doubles as a lounge chair -- fits me perfect -- I kin sit up jist high enuf so's only a REALLY tall dog has any chance of "markin" me ;) or where I'm sittin -- always check afore I sit ;)

as fer the landmines -- there's a lot of em -- PEOPLE PICK UP AFTER YER DOGS!

fergot to check my shoes once -- and was hittin the I-8 EB when I noticed a smell -- EEEWWWWW -- all over my floor mat & brake pedal -- EEEEWWWW!

always check my feet on leavin the gate now ;)

park is fenced, double gated, there are trees, usually lotsa chairs folks bring to leave off, on th west side there's a concrete picnic table, at the south entrance there is a water fountain fer pups & peeps, & parkin lots @ both entrances

oh, and the smaller fenced area is NOT intended fer smaller dogs -- that is jist so when it rains -- THAT area floods -- and some folks dogs aren't so well "voice controlled" ;)

*my* girl understands and obeys "stay outta the water" ;)

course now, iffin we're @ dog beach in Coronado -- she understands "HIT the water" jist as well :) "She" LOVES to run and frolic in the surf!

witnessed a couple of fights in 6 years of goin here -- one I broke up w my walkin stick -- carry a shieghleigh I do ;) it don't bleed -- keeps the rambunctous fur folks offa me as well

funnyist thing I ever saw my "She" do here -- "She" is fixed, but has an affinity fer young attractive male pit bulls -- [ she's a Lab - Smooth Collie herself ] She went upta this one goodlookin young pit , sniffed him VERY intimatly, turned, and looked at me and smacked her lips w a smile!!!!!!

there were bout 5 of us standin there chattin when she did it and ALL of us hadta be carefull not to fall on the ground [ landmines] ;) we was laughin SO hard!!

"She" lives here --
